Located in Borrego Springs, California, La Casa del Zorro is nestled in the stunning Anza Borrego State Park, ranked by National Geographic magazine as the best state park in California. La Casa del Zorro enjoys a unique setting in the midst of the scenic 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego desert, a nature-land of serenity and solitude. Cradled by the Santa Rosa Mountains, towering six thousand feet over the desert floor, the resort is close to hiking trails and endless opportunities to explore unspoiled canyons, buttes, and mesas. Borrego Springs is one of the few "dark-sky communities" in the world. The skies are illuminated by millions of bright stars and galaxies due to night light restrictions. In spring, the pink and lavender Sand Verbena wildflowers cover acres of the desert floor.
Since re-opening in 2013 La Casa del Zorro has been rediscovered by travel writers and guests from around the world. After reading our latest news and reviews, you’ll be ready to pack your bags for an unforgettable experience.
The hand-hewn beams and old adobe walls in the lobby of La Casa del Zorro are reminders of the resort’s heritage. Our first guests arrived in the fall of 1933, when the resort was just a house on the old Burks Ranch.
Over the years, as more guests came to the quiet retreat, the resort began to grow. Visitors far and wide, from Los Angeles to Switzerland, from San Diego to the Netherlands, traveled to Borrego Springs to experience the rejuvenating desert, sparkling sunshine, and nights so dark and clear that the stars in the sky seemed closer to earth than anyplace else.
Decades ago, guests gathered around the kitchen table for their meals. Some even washed dishes. Today, fine dining in the Butterfield Dining Room and the Rose Garden Terrace is a hallmark of the resort, and so is the custom of families returning to visit as the years go by. Many of our guests and staff have known the resort since they were children, and the connections between La Casa del Zorro and the neighboring communities are strong.
In 1960, newspaper magnate James Copley purchased La Casa del Zorro. New guest accommodations were added, the first swimming pool was built, and the dining room was expanded.
Today, continued thoughtful and extensive renovations, which respect the unique character and charm of the property, capture the historic echoes of the past. Present day luxuries and amenities, including a full-service spa, compliment the essence of La Casa del Zorro… an inviting retreat for people who love the outdoors, appreciate gracious hospitality, and value the opportunity to spend their time in a stunning natural setting.
